Rainiai Memorial

3 kilometers far from Telšiai there is a Rainiai village. The village is marked with several inhuman historical facts.  In memory for those who survived here the Rainiai Memorial was built. The memorial temple holds authentic relicts, documents of the brutal act which was held there.

It is declared that the limitations statue does not obtain for war crimes. One of the main purposes of building the Rainiai Memorial was to declare the existing hope that all criminals who once made similar terrible crimes will be punished. The story of the massacre in Telšiai district began in 1941 June when Soviet occupants felt a threat by Nazi military forces. Understanding their hopeless situation they started retreating from Lithuania earlier than they would have been crucified by Germans. Chaos and panic among Soviet forces and their toadies spread rapidly fast. This desperate retreat left a severe scarf in Lithuanian history.

The same year spring Soviets had established a prison in Telšiai city where „political criminals“ were jailed. These “political criminals” where Lithuanian men who somehow expressed their patriotism. Many young men were terribly tormented in this Soviet jail for any reasons. But the 24th of June 1941 Soviets  reached the very top of their inhumanity. They picked 76 “worst” prisoners and brought them into the Rainiai forest where 4 deep trenches had already been excavated. Soviets began their cruel slaughter which was disguised by forest thickness, non stopping  roar of truck`s motors and saved by armed soldiers and heavy artillery.

The execution was started at the midnight and finished before dawn. In order to satisfy their sick needs Soviets tormented innocent people in the most grisly ways. It is even inconceivable how a human being could treat another human like that. For people with weaker nerves it is recommended not to read the next paragraph.

A few  days after the torture the back filled tranches with deformed bodies were accidently found. The bodies were pulled out and the procedure of identification and finding of injuries revealed terrible facts. Soviets peeled the skin of martyrs still alive, broke their bones, put out eyes, sawed off noses, ears, private parts, scalded them with boiling water, burnt with fire, shook with electricity,  beat with maces. Most skulls were split. For some still alive people brains were mixed or perforated. Soviets unmercifully jeered from these men and killed them in the most cruel ways. That was not a reasonable act, that was only satisfaction of their inhuman follies.

No witnesses alive left till nowadays except of one. Petras Raslanas, the organizer and hand of this massacre is still alive and lives in Russia. Russia does not agree to dispense the criminal to implement  the deserved punishment: prison until death. However, the criminal will sooner or later face the God judgment.

People from various regions come to visit the Rainiai Memorial and to honor the memento of people killed there. The Rainiai Memorial is one of the main monuments for freedom protagonists and Lithuanian patriots that sacrificed their lives for their motherland.
