Panevėžys

Panevėžys is the fifth largest Lithuanian city located in an ethnographic region of Aukštaitija. There are approximately  116200 inhabitants living in the area of 50 km2. Panevėžys is straight in the half way between two capitals – Vilnius and Riga and is easy reachable by the highway Via Baltica connecting the city with number of Western Europe and Scandinavian countries. The city was named after the river as this green and cosy city lies on the bank of river Nevėžis. Panevėžys is thought to be one of the main industrial spots in Lithuania  but also it is a marvelous area of greenery and cleanliness.

History

In 2003 Panevėžys celebrated its 500th anniversary as in 1503 the first church in the land between the rivers Lėvuo and Nevėžis was erected. The first church, however, did not survive during the centuries, but it was replaced by a descendant St. Peter and Paul`s Church which was rebuilt several times and stands till nowadays. In the 16th century Panevėžys was famous for its agriculture, crafts and pubs so it broadly prospered and the new part of Panevėžys was built. The new Panevėžys soon overgrew the old city and till the 19th century enlarged the economical and educational city power 16 times. Panevėžys became a generally accredited spot of Lithuanian economy, industry and culture.

Nowadays

Panevėžys is called a city of mills as there were and still are many mills around the city. The central square is called the Freedom square where just in front of it the most famous place to have a nice walk or other entertainments  in Panevėžys is located. The place is under name of Wash (Senvagė lit.)and attracts people because of its beauty including a pond, several little bridges and artistic sculptures. Also there are 3 distinctive churches in Panevėžys. In addition to this, visiting the Regional Museum is also strongly advisable as well as visiting galleries such like Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery, Art and Photography galleries, The Gallery “Second Floor” and the “XX” expositions. Panevėžys is now famous for  growing up number of great artists. The most significant was the prosperity of its Drama theatre of Juozas Miltinis where many famous actors were well prepared not only for Lithuanian but and for foreign stage too. The theatre is now one of main culture objects in Panevėžys as there also is a unique Puppet Wagon theatre and the Menas (Art) Theatre. An international  Puppet theaters festival called “Briefcase” is held in Panevėžys every 2 years and attracts the audience looking for unusual expressions. In Panevėžys many world famous sportsmen like Arvydas Sabonis, Virgilijus Alekna, Simona Krupeckaitė, Diana Žiliūtė were acquired as the city is propagating sports and healthy life style.

Despite the fact that Panevėžys is one of the highest delinquency level reaching Lithuanian city, it shines in charm and sincerity. Lithuanians usually say that Panevėžys is full of intolerance, but it is only a stereotype as friendly local citizens are always ready to help and to meet city guests with joy.
