Mėnuo Juodaragis Festival

In order to cherish pagan traditions, a great neo – folk festival called Mėnuo Juodaragis (Black Horned Moon) is held in Lithuania since 1995 on the last weekend of summer. 3 days and 2 nights the festivals delights its visitors with an archaic and modern music, arts and films, dances and rituals, old crafts and many other things. This festival is both – remembering the old and forgotten traditions and presenting nowadays Baltic culture.

The history of the festival began in 1997 when a few young people gathered in Verbiškės village to enjoy the small folk fest they arranged by themselves.  Since then the festival enlarged and every year attracted more and more people rapt in the festival idea. Many young creative people find it fantastic to gather in some really picturesque location of nature and to enjoy alternative forms of music, that ranges from neo – folk, ethno, gothic, tribal to metal, rock, avant-garde. Mėnuo Juodaragis has become one of the most interesting summer festivals in Lithuania for a very significant reason: it is the only event where the common rhythm of nations, generations, ancestral traditions and ideas and can be felt, cherished and shared.

In 2009 already the 12th Mėnuo Juodaragis was arranged. For a few recent years it has been located in marvelous wild island of Zarasai lake. Great artists from Lithuania and 12 other European countries including many famous names of alternative scene like Lithuanian singer Aistė Smilgevičiūtė & Skylė, pagan rockers from UK Inkubus Sukkubus, neo – folk classics Of the Wand and the Moon from Denmark , ethereal wave band from Bulgaria Irfan, Dandelion Wine from Australia and others. Non-stop performances on 4 different stages guaranteed something suitable for everyone. As Mėnuo Juodaragis nowadays is much more than music, the program of the festival united also exclusive lectures, traditional rites, art exhibitions, ethnic workshops, folk dances and other activities.

Mėnuo Juodaragis is still a very successful and growing festival which every year attracts more and more people. In the very beginning only tens enjoyed it. Nowadays - thousands already. Support by media channels, enterprises and private persons, national maintenance and favour with the society are these factors which enable the festival to grow even more. Mėnuo Juodaragis is considered to be a pagan ritual of nowadays. It enables crowds of people to experience the power of past traditions and strength of mythological and magical World Tree.
