Dzūkija

There is a well known sentence in Lithuania : “If not mushrooms, if not fruits,  girls in Dzūkija were nude”. And this thesis is not just a joke, for sure, Dzūkija is famous for its forests rich in goodies. The south western region of Lithuania between two main rivers in Lithunia – Nemunas and Neris , was called Dzūkija only in the 19th century sustaining the literature sources where the specific dialect was propagated. The dialect was called “dzukavimas”, it is the way of language where there are many consonants of sharp consonance like “dz”, “dzh” “ts”. Many old trades remained till nowadays in Dzūkija. Perhaps the best weavers in Lithuania are from Dzūkija as well as the best singers.  In ancient times already sounds of music leaded people of Dzūkija on all occasions. Hospitable people of Dzūkija are always in good mood and in great shape. Nowadays there are a few residential villages that look like open air museums where visitors can come and spend a day in a real ancient village..

The most impressive nature recess in Dzūkija are the fantastic Druskininkai and Trakai resorts where people come to spend their holiday, romantic weekends or to have some wellness procedures. Clean, unpolluted, salty air refreshes bodies and minds fast so people feel totally recreated.  Not only wellness is propagated in Dzūkija region. Number of impressive palaces and mounds scattered in the whole Dzūkija region astonish visitors with their beauty and oneness. The beauty of a unique Trakai island castle astonishes people from all over Lithuania and foreign countries.  In the green and hilly environment of Dzūkija there lived and created such art figures like the famous Lithuanian artist Antanas Zmuidzinavičius, composer Juozas Karpavičius, the opera singer Marija Aleškevičiūtė.

According to the map of regions in Lithuania, the Lithuanian capital Vilnius also belongs to Dzūkija. However, the partition does not really images the reality as Vilnius, for example, is more a multiregional city than a part of Dzūkija as historical moments corrected the mentality of regionalism. That explains why the center of Dzūkija is in Alytus as that is the city where traditions and culture of Dzūkija were propagated for centuries.
