Taking this tour is a very interesting way to get acquainted with Žemaitija region.

Tauragė

In the South west of Lithuania, Žematija region there Tauragė city is located. The city occupies a territory of 15,7 sq. kilometers and there live approximately 27 700 inhabitants. Tauragė stretches on the valley of Jūra (Sea) river. It is the center of Tauragė district including many interesting sightseeing places, culture monuments and picturesque bottoms of Jūra, Šešuvis and Akmena rivers.

Mažeikiai

Mažeikiai is a city located in North Lithuania on the shore of river Venta. It is only 10 kilometers far from the board with Latvia. Its location is a bit away from the rest of other bigger Lithuanian cities thus Mažeikiai is pretty influential one in the region. Overall in the district of Mažeikiai there live almost 66 000 people, almost 41 000 live in Mažeikiai. The Mažeikiai region is one of the most populous regions in Lithuania.

Kretinga

Kretinga is a town located in West Lithuania in the Klaipėda County. Also it is the center of Kretinga district and municipality. Kretinga is only 12 kilometers far from Palanga seaside resort thus it is really attractive to live in or to stay in for a while: the best Lithuanian attractions are really close, but you are not dwarfed by epicenter of entertainments.

Rainiai Memorial

3 kilometers far from Telšiai there is a Rainiai village. The village is marked with several inhuman historical facts.  In memory for those who survived here the Rainiai Memorial was built. The memorial temple holds authentic relicts, documents of the brutal act which was held there.

Plungė

Plungė is located in the North West Lithuania. It is a town including more than 23 000 inhabitants in the territory of 11,78 square kilometers.  Plungė is one of the main cities in Žemaitija, second most important after Telšiai. Rich history, great geographical location and sophisticated local society create a wonderful entire of the town.

 

Telšiai

Telšiai is a city called the capital of Žematija (Samogitia) located in north west Lithuania. It is also a center of region and district too. Almost 30000 citizens of Telšiai city lives in a territory of 16,4 sq.km. The city is settled on 7 hills surrounding the legendary Mastis lake, thus it is sometimes called Rome of Lithuania. The name for the city was given under name of little river Telšė which debouch into Mastis lake.

Kuršėnai

Kuršėnai is the biggest city in Lithuania which is not declared to be a center of region.  Located just 25 km west of Šiauliai between 2 train stations (Pavenčiai train station and Kuršėnai train station) and 2 important highways (Šiauliai – Palanga and Šiauliai - Mažeikiai), it is alive for almost  430 years. According to Lithuanian department of statistics, in the beggining of 2009, 13617 inhabitants lived there in the territory of  12 sq. km divided into 2 sides by the river Venta.

Žemaitija (Samogitia, Lowlands)

Žemaitija is in a north western region. The capital of Žemaitija is Telšiai. Žemaitija is the only one region in Lithuania which had an independent self-government for 400 years.  That influenced the formation of greatest differences between Žemaitija and the rest of Lithuania. Many different crafts flourished in Žemaitija. Carpenters, coopers,  tailors, slog makers, blacksmiths and potters had many things to do there.

Church of St. John the Baptist

The most attention catching focus in Plungė`s Old Town is the marvelous premise of Church of St. John the Baptist. It is a significant architectonic surplus for the Plungė city as well as for the all district of Plungė. The church is of neo – romanesque style built under Latin cross-plan including two gorgeous towers.
