Palanga is a resort famous for white sand beaches, marvellous dunes. It is the most universal resort in Lithuania where anyone can find a suitable way to have rest and fun. In 2010 summer, when all Europe suffered from terrible heat, Palanga resort became a place of salvation, like a promised land for many people from Lithuania and abroad, offering perfect weather temperature and a refreshing sea water.
According to its location, the vicinity where Palanga resort is now located was settled in 4-5th millenary before our era already as the Baltic sea was a great impulse to settle there. The Baltic sea formed the mentality, culture, trade and relations with other nations of former local inhabitants and the singularity of the region persisted till nowadays. Settling near the sea was beneficial as people where able to prosper while using water assets.
However, not only merchants landed in the shore. The area looked very valuable for conquerors too. In fact, the first mention of Palanga name is related with the landing of Danish army there in 1161. Norse, Normans, Teutonic Order and other nations tried to conquer Palanga, but the town finally accrued to Lithuania in 1435 after signing the Bresto peace treaty. In 13-18th century Palanga harbor was one of the most important harbors on the Baltic sea shore. Merchants from faraway hailed there in order to barter their goods for local amber, honey and fur. The harbor was so competitive that neighbor countries united in order to destroy it in 1701. The real prosper of the city began when Counts Tiškevičiai bought the area. A park, a mansion-house, new harbor, brick fabric, first convalescent house and a church were built. During the years of print suppression (1864-1904) Palanga was the main passage for book-carriers to supply Lithuania with the forbidden Lithuanian print. A very interesting fact is that in the end of print suppression the first Lithuanian spectacle “America in the Bath” was performed in Palanga in 1899. After surviving war challenges and soviet occupation in the 20th century, Palanga finally opened the new historic page in 1991 when nationalized property was returned to owners as Lithuania got back its independence. Infrastructure and services were improved and Palanga became a modern up to date resort.
