The first Lithuanian national park was projected 40 years ago. Then the importance of the park had to be proved as the word “national” sounded doubtfully for many soviet headquarters. Luckily, the idea of national parks establishment was implement. Lithuanians brought all efforts in order to establish at least one national park in all different regions of Lithuania. Nowadays there are 5 national parks all preserving natural ecosystems, typical natural and cultural heritage as well as recreating damaged complexes of Lithuanian nature and culture.

Trakai Historical National Park is the smallest national park in Lithuania. Trakai Historical National Park is located very near the capital of Lithuania, it covers about 8 000 ha. It's the only Historical National Park in the Europe.

Žemaitija National park is located in the north west of Lithuania. Žemaitija National Park covers about 22 000 ha, which are divided into four zones: recreation, protection, farming and conservation.
